TEENAGERS EXPRESS THEMSELVES IN ORATIO 2014

St. Anthony’s High School hosted the third edition of its signature event Oratio, the Inter-School Elocution Competition 2014, at Father Camille Limbourg Auditorium. Like preceding years this year too the event found an overwhelming participation response from the city schools.Students from fifteen schools participated in this year’s event showcasing their oratorical skills. The schools, apart from the host school, were St. Xavier’s Collegiate School, St. James School, Loreto Day School (Eliot Road), Grace Ling Liang School, St. Mary’s School, St. Joseph’s College, Union Chapel School, St. Paul’s Mission School, St. Aloysius Day School, La Martiniere for Girls, Birla High School, Apeejay School, The Park English School and Calcutta Boys’ School.

Eminent Bengali poet and Sahitya Akademi Award winner (2013) Dr. Subodh Sarkar inaugurated the event. In his speech Dr. Sarkar expressed his admiration for the discipline shown by the students of the school. It was followed by a prayer dance performed by the students of the host school. The topic of the elocution competition was LIVING AS A TEENAGER IN THE 21ST CENTURY, which gave tremendous scope for the students to express their views. The event was sponsored by Mr. Murli Punjabi (ex-student) with OUP being the co-sponsor.

Once the competition started students from various schools spoke eloquently on the topic. The judges, Dr. Siddhartha Biswas (Dean of Post Graduate Studies, St. Paul’s Cathedral Mission College), Dr. Rangana Banerji (Assistant Professor of English, Calcutta University) and Dr. Subhadeep Paul (Assistant Professor of English, Maulana Azad College), had a tough time deciding the winner.

Finally when the results were declared the first prize went to Kanishk Gomes of St. Xavier’s Collegiate School. In the second position there was a tie between Nabhonil Chatterji of Birla High School and Toushif Akram of St. Anthony’s High School. The third prize was won by Manushri Kanoria of La Martiniere for Girls. The Championship trophy went to La Martiniere for Girls.The Headmaster, Fr. Devraj Fernandes, expressed his thanks to all the guests, judges, sponsors, teachers, students, participant schools and well-wishers for making the event a grand success.
